Der Spiegel// 9/5/11

The extremist NPD party of Germany is garnering criticism for the above poster, which features a phrase that translates to "step on the gas." Since the NPD party has neo-Nazi ties, many people are considering the poster to be an open allusion to the death chambers of the Holocaust.  The party has used anti-Semetic themes in its campaigns before, so it seems unlikely that the 'gas' reference in the poster was an accident.  It's shocking to me that members of this party actually hold positions in some of Berlin's district councils.  Unfortunately it seems that Germany still contains some of the anti-Semitism that has so badly scarred its past.  Read the article here.

Food prices are exploding worldwide, but the results are a lot different for those living comfortably in Western nations than for those already on the brink of starvation in undeveloped and developing countries.  While there are a multitude of possible reasons for the price hikes, according to this article, excessive speculation is the true cause.  I certainly won't pretend to have a very clear understanding on how speculation works, but it seems that, essentially, investors are playing around with the market without regard to the human lives at stake.
