Dining Hall Recycling

Dining Hall Recycling From Clamshells to Coffee Cups, You Can Recycle It!

Don't forget to recycle your food and drink containers when leaving the campus dining halls. All food and drink containers in the dining halls are recyclable with the exception of chip bags and the Chick-fil-A sandwich bags. That means all clamshell containers, coffee cups, soda cups/bottles, salad containers, forks/knives, etc. are recyclable- you just have to empty out the majority of food and liquid in them before recycling.

Please be aware that the dining halls in the University Union have new recycling stations that provide containers for liquids, recycling, and food waste and trash. The only thing that should go in the trash are used napkins, Chick-fil-A sandwich bags and Frito Lay chip bags.

Help us to reduce landfill waste and make the campus a more sustainable environment. Recycle today!

While I rarely eat on campus, I think this a really cool development! However, having been a member of ResLife at another university does make me slightly skeptical.  The University of Delaware introduced personal recycling bins to the dorm rooms the year I was an RA, and at the of the year I found out that the materials placed in these bins were not recycled a single time the entire year because they were always over the 5% contamination rate.  No one ever made this fact known to the students (I found out at the very last staff meeting of the year), but rather the school gave itself a big pat on the back for providing recycling bins.  I truly hope that this is not the case with dining hall recycling! I wonder about the statement saying that the "majority" of food must be emptied... I was always under the impression that materials cannot be recycled unless all food residue must be removed.  I'll be very interested in seeing whether this recent development is successful.

P.S. LOL about the chick-fil-A bags... really?
